A hidden file exists on your Windows XP computer called the index.dat file. It keeps a record of all history conducted on your computer, including recently access documents and programs, as well as deleted Internet history. If you want to store a copy of your Windows XP history, all you need to do is copy the index.dat file.

      Click "Start," "Search," "Tools," then "Folder Options." Click the "View" tab.

      Click the option to "Show hidden files and folders." Deselect the options to "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide important operating system files." Click "Apply" and then "OK." You are returned to the Search window.

      Set your search parameters to look in "All Files and Folders" in the "C Drive" for the "index.dat" file.

      Right-click on the index.dat file in the search results pane and click "Copy." Paste the copy to the desired location.

Tips & Warnings

  • For best record keeping, paste the copy of your Windows XP history to a portable flash drive so you have it in the event that your computer crashes.

  • Restore your default file and folder options when you are done so important hidden files do not become damaged. Restore your default options by clicking the "Restore Defaults" button located in the "View" tab of the "Folder Options" window.
