Importing Contacts to Outlook From Yahoo

Microsoft Outlook is a premier email client included in the Microsoft Office suite of products. One of the many features of Outlook is the ability to import Contacts, otherwise known as the Address Book, from other email programs into the Outlook application. Yahoo! offers a free email service that has become very popular over the years. The Address Book may be easily exported from the Yahoo! email interface to be imported into the Outlook application.

Export Address Book from Yahoo

  • Open a Web browser and navigate to Yahoo! Mail.

  • Log into the email account with the Contacts list to be exported.

  • Click the "Contacts" tab on the top navigation bar in Yahoo! Mail.

  • Click the downward-pointing arrow next to the "Tools" button.

  • Select the "Export" link from the menu. A dialog box will appear displaying several selections for formatting the export.

  • Click the "Export Now" button next to the "Microsoft Outlook" label. A Microsoft Excel file will be downloaded to the hard drive.

  • Save the .xls file in a convenient place, like the desktop.

Import Contacts into Outlook

  • Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Microsoft Outlook" from the list of programs.

  • Click the "File" option from the top navigation bar.

  • Click the "Import and Export" option from the context menu.

  • Click "Import from Another Program or File", and then click "Next".

  • Select the "Microsoft Excel" file type option and click "Next".

  • Click the "Browse" button to display the file navigation window.

  • Navigate to the .xls file exported from Yahoo! Mail. Click the file to load.

  • Click "Do Not Duplicate Items", and click "Next".

  • Select the "Contacts" folder as the destination for the import, and click "Next".

  • Click "Map Custom Fields" and check to make sure all fields from Yahoo! are in the same order as the Outlook Contacts fields. Click "Next".

  • Click "OK" to import the Contact list.

  • Click the "Finish" button when the list has finished importing.

  • Test the imported Contact list by creating a new email in Outlook, clicking on the "To" button, and verifying imported names and contact information in the Contact list.
