How to Transfer Computer Files to a New Computer

Save

You have a few options when you want to transfer files from one computer to another. A cheap and easy option would be to use a USB flash drive. Flash drives are small, portable devices used specifically for storing and transfer data. If your computer is equipped with a CD burner, using a blank CD, you can create a data CD that can be read by other computers. Data CDs work similar to flash drives, but they often cannot carry as much information.

Things You'll Need

  • Optical drive (CD/DVD burner)
  • Blank CD-R
  • USB flash drive

Flash Drive

  • Insert the flash drive into any available USB port on your computer. A window displaying the name and drive letter associated with the flash drive will pop up.

  • Click the "Start" icon in the Windows taskbar. Click "My Computer" ("Computer" in Windows Vista/7).

  • Double-click the name of the flash drive. (See Step 1.) This will open the root storage directory of the flash drive (where all of the files on the device are stored).

  • Drag the files that you want to transfer into the root storage directory.

  • Disconnect the the flash drive. Connect it to the new computer. Follow steps 1 to 3. Drag to the computer's desktop the files that you want to transfer.

Data CD (Windows XP/Vista/7)

  • Insert a blank CD-R into your computer's optical drive. Close the AutoPlay window (if any appears).

  • Click the "Start" icon in the Windows taskbar. Click "My Computer" or "Computer."

  • Double-click the name of your computer's disc drive. A blank Windows Explorer window will open.

  • Drag and drop the files that you want to transfer into the blank window. You can also right-click the files that you want to transfer and select "Send To [name of disc drive]." Keep track of the counter displaying the amount of space remaining on the disc.

  • Click the "Close Session/Write these files to CD" button. The CD Burning Wizard will open. Enter a name for the CD (optional). Click "Next" to begin finalizing the CD. The CD will eject when the process is complete.

  • Insert the CD into the computer that you want to transfer the files to. A window will open. Click "Open folder to view files." Drag to the computer's desktop the files that you want to transfer.
