How to Knit Finger Puppets for the Three Little Pigs

How to Knit Finger Puppets for the Three Little Pigs thumbnail
Turn a simple knitted square into a finger puppet.

The Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs come to life in this easy knitting project. Bedtime stories will be enhanced with an impromptu finger puppet show. Making the simple finger puppets requires that you know the basic knit and purl stitches. Young children can help complete the finished project by gluing on the pig and wolf facial details. This is also a good first project for an older child who has learned how to knit.

Instructions

    • 1

For a pig finger puppet, begin by casting on 12 stitches with the pink yarn. For the first row, knit one, purl one until the end of the row.

    • 2

Turn and knit one row. Turn and purl one row. Continue in this fashion, which is the stockinette stitch, until your knitting project is 1 3/4 inches long.

    • 3

On the last row, knit two stitches together six times, leaving six stitches on the needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Thread the yarn tail on a tapestry needle and pull it through the six stitches left on the knitting needle. Knot the yarn to close the knitting and sew down the back seam to complete the finger puppet base. You will now have a tube that fits over your finger.

    • 4

For the pig finger puppets, cut two circles of pink felt, using a quarter as a guide. Draw on two dots in the center of the circle for the pig snout with the marker. Cut the other circle in half for the pig ears. Glue on the snout and ears and draw two eyes on the puppet with the marker.

    • 5

For the wolf, knit a finger puppet base with the gray yarn following the steps outlined above. Cut two small triangles and one large triangle out of the gray felt. Midway down the larger triangle, with the point down, draw eyes near the triangle edges with the marker. Draw a nose at the triangle point. Glue the large triangle and the smaller ear triangles on the wolf finger puppet.
