A window scarf valance is a type of window treatment topper where a fabric is draped from one side of the window to the other in a soft manner. This type of treatment may use a curtain rod to secure the valance or two separate scarf hangers. It can be used in addition to drapes or on its own. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Position a tall ladder close to the wall and window where you want to install the window treatment. Measure 4 inches above and to each side of the window trim for the standard position of traditional windows. Make a mark with a pencil.

    • 2

Place a stud finder on the wall to locate a stud in the area where you want to mount the curtain rod. When possible, it is always a good idea to mount your rod hardware directly into a stud. For walls without an accessible stud, select a wall anchor for the type of wall you have and the amount of weight the rod will be carrying.

    • 3

Screw the wall anchors, screws and hardware into the wall. Insert the curtain rod and use a level to make sure the curtain rod is aligned with the top of the window.

    • 4

Lay your window scarf out on a table. With your hands shoulder-width apart, gather the scarf in each hand. Place the scarf over each end of the curtain rod so that there is a soft draping in the middle and long soft ends hanging down the sides. The draping in the middle should be centered and even.

    • 5

If using scarf holders, position them at the same location you would place the curtain rod hardware. Scarf holders can look like decorative posts, architectural features or round swirled metal. Gather the scarf on the table and drape the scarf over the central section of the scarf holders. Adjust the fabric until you achieve the look you want.

Tips & Warnings

  • Scarf holders work particularly well on very high windows that will not have drapes. These holders allow you to easily create a window treatment even for unusually shaped windows. Some tall windows require a lot of fabric, so select a fabric that doesn't fray.
