Horsepower is a unit of power.

A horsepower (HP) is a unit of power that equals 746 watts. It is often used in calculating the power of direct current motors, for example. Watts are equal to amperes times voltage. The number of amperes times the voltage is a unit known as a volt ampere (VA), and 1,000 VA is a kilovolt ampere (KVA). Using these numbers, you can quickly arrive at a figure for the number of KVA per HP.

      Calculate the number of KVA per HP by beginning with 1 HP and working toward the equivalent value in KVA.

      Take the number of watts in 1 HP, which is 746, and convert it to VA. Since 1 watt equals 1 VA, you have 746 VA.

      Divide the number of VA by 1,000 to get KVA. For 746 VA, this equals .746 KVA, thus there are .746 KVA per 1 HP.

      Convert KVA to HP by multiplying the number of HP by .746. For example, 50 HP would equal 37.3 KVA.
