How to Set Up a Home Computer Network Workgroup thumbnail
A home computer network allows you to share files and peripherals between computers.

A home computer network requires a workgroup to identify the network. This allows all of the computers in the house to be seen in "My Network Places." It also allows you to share music, videos, pictures and other documents across the network. Finally, you'll be able to use printers and other peripherals in a shared workgroup environment.

Instructions

    • 1

      Right-click on "My Computer."

    • 2

      Choose "Properties."

    • 3

Go to the "Computer Name" tab on the "System Properties" window.

    • 4

      Click the "Change" button.

    • 5

Enter your new workgroup name in the "Workgroup" text box. Hit "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also set your workgroup name in the "Set Up a Home Or Small Office Network" wizard, located under "Control Panel" in the "Network Connections" section.

  • Making your workgroup name different from other computers on the network will not allow you to access the other computers, unless they all share the same workgroup.
