How to Use a 2Wire Home Networking Modem as a Stand-Alone thumbnail
2Wire modems allow computers to access the Internet.

Stand-alone modems are the single piece of equipment you need to connect to the Internet. This means there is less clutter since there are no other routers or switches involved. Stand-alone modems can be used to connect the computers, printers and gaming systems within your home. All 2Wire home networking gateway models have an interface, and work with any Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) provider.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your computer to the 2Wire modem with an ethernet cord. You may use any of the four ethernet ports on the 2Wire modem.

    • 2

Type "gateway.2wire.net" in the address bar of your Web browser to access the user interface. You can connect using any browser, including Internet Explorer.

    • 3

Click on the "Broadband Link" icon to get to the broadband link summary page. Click on the "Advanced Settings" link to get into the broadband link advanced settings page.

    • 4

Type in your system password to enter this section of the interface. If you forgot the password, follow the instructions at the bottom of the window to reset it.

    • 5

Select the appropriate "Connection Type" depending on your Internet service provider. Most providers use a "PPPoE" connection type. If this is the case, you will be required to enter a username, usually in the form of an e-mail address, and password that your provider has on file for your connection.

    • 6

Click the "Save" button to update these settings. The 2Wire modem will take about 20 seconds to reconnect with new settings. The modem may also restart itself within the next few minutes after making these changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the connection type in Step 5 says "DHCP", then there is nothing further to type.

  • If you forget your username in Step 5, contact your service provider. If you forget your system password, you may be prompted to contact 2Wire technical support for a password reset.
