How to Optimize BitTorrent
BitTorrent, also called BitTorrent Mainline, is a BitTorrent client: a program capable of opening files that end in a .torrent extension. BitTorrent Mainline is named after the BitTorrent protocol, a technology that allows users to share information with one another in small pieces. A user's network speed and program settings can have a large impact on how long it takes to share data using BitTorrent. Taking steps to optimize BitTorrent and your network can increase download speed.

1
Test your connection speed using an online connection speed tester; BitTorrent recommends "DSL Reports" (See resource link 2 at the bottom of this page, click the first link and then click on the location listed that is closest to you to run the test.).
-
2
Open BitTorrent, click "Options," "Speed Guide," and choose the upload speed (rounded down) in the list that is closest to your upload speed as determined by the speed test, and click "Use Selected Settings."
-
-
3
Allow the BitTorrent through Windows Firewall. In BitTorrent, click "Options," "Preferences," "Connection," and check "Add BitTorrent to Windows Firewall" if it is not checked already.
-
4
Enable protocol encryption. Click "Options," "Preferences," "BitTorrent," choose "Enable" for "Outgoing" and check "Allow incoming legacy connections."
-
5
Run torrent files that have as many seeds and peers as possible. BitTorrent speed depends on other users sharing files. If you run a torrent file that has few people sharing it (seeds and peers) download speed may be slow. Websites that host torrent downloads often list the number of seeds and peers.

Tips & Warnings

BitTorrent warns that users should "Take care to follow your country's laws concerning copyrighted content" when using the program.
