How to Avoid a Screen in Basketball

If you're aware that you're headed for a screen, it'll be that much easier to avoid.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Basketballs

Step1
Remain close to the player you're defending.
Step2
Be aware of where you are on the court.
Step3
Use your peripheral vision to be prepared for other players.
Step4
Decide to go above or below the screen when you see an opponent setting up to knock you off. Hopefully, your teammates will alert you to the screen as well.
Step5
Base your decision on whether or not your opponent has the ball and where your opponent is going.
Step6
Stay close to your player if she/he has the ball by sliding above the screen. Even if your player doesn't have the ball, this is the preferred method because you remain close to your player.
Step7
Slide underneath the screen if you have an idea where your player is going without the ball. It's easier to step under the screen and allow some distance between you and the player you're guarding, but that's why they're setting a screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't run through the player setting the screen. You could get called for charging and, even if you don't, you're going to have trouble keeping up with your player.
  • You have a better chance of avoiding the screen if you slide your feet rather than cross them.
  • Good defense requires persistence. Be persistent.

on 11/22/2005 It is difficult to screen a man who is in good defensive position off-ball. If you play "flat, triangle" defense where you roughly split the distance between your man and the ball, there are very few players you will face that have the skills to position themselves correctly for a screen.

on 11/22/2005 This tip is from my husband, who is a head coach at a private school. He would like to know, "Why isn't the screener's defensive man stepping out to allow the defender extra time to recover?"
