How to Check the Oil in My 2004 Toyota Corolla
Aside from changing your 2004 Corolla's oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles or three months, Toyota also recommends that you check your oil level regularly. For example, oil could be escaping through a pinhole leak or burning fast because of too low a viscosity. In such cases, you could lose a quart or more per thousand miles. You'll want to catch such problems as soon as possible.

1
Idle the engine until the radiator fan comes on. This improves the oil reading. Let the engine cool for five minutes to give the oil time to settle in the sump.
-
2
Lift the hood and find the dipstick. For the 2004 Corolla, it should be in front of the engine.

-
3
Pull out the dipstick and wipe off the oil with a rag or paper towel. Reinsert it all the way down. Take it back out again.

4
Check where the oil lands on the crosshatch marks. If the oil doesn't reach the crosshatches, add oil. If the oil covers the crosshatches and further, the excess oil may be impairing your mileage. If the oil is opaque, consider an oil change soon. In dusty terrain, oil changes may need to be more frequent than under usual conditions.

Tips & Warnings
If the oil goes higher than the crosshatches, consider having a different garage do your oil changes or do them yourself. Excess oil can impair fuel efficiency and even damage the engine.
If you're burning through oil at a rate of a quart per thousand miles or faster, check the viscosity being put in. Also check the oil line, particularly around metal clamps on rubber. It's easier to replace a rubber hose than to test your warranty with a blown engine.
