Google's free design program, SketchUp, is useful for creating 3D models of, among other things, houses and other buildings. While adding a roof may be the last thing you think about when drawing out a floor plan, you'll need to add one to the finished product.
The simplest roof to design, besides a completely flat roof, is a hip roof. Hip roofs slant downward in all directions, without any gables. They're also known as "pyramid roofs."
Drawing a hip roof in Google SketchUp is a good step for the aspiring SketchUp designer to learn, and the general principles employed can be useful for other projects.
Things You'll Need
- Google SketchUp
Open a new or existing SketchUp file.
Rotate your view until you can see the roof of the building you are working on. If you are not working on a pre-existing project, draw a rectangle using the Rectangle tool and then pull it up into a three-dimensional box using the Push/Pull tool. This box will be your building.
Select the Line tool from the toolbar. Draw lines connecting the opposite corners of the roof, so that the two lines form an X.
Select the Move/Copy tool from the toolbar. Grab the middle of the X and pull it upward, along the blue axis. This will create a hip roof for your building.
Use the Move/Copy tool to adjust the height of the roof to your liking.
Tips & Warnings
- To add different textures to your roof, click the "Paintbucket" button on the toolbar and open the "Roofing" folder.
