Select eyeshadow colors that are compatible in hue. Most makeup companies make the decision of finding complementary eyeshadow shades very easy by packaging several shades in one convenient compact.

Apply any foundation makeup first, including liquid foundation or face powder. Refrain from using any face makeup that is oil-based on the eyelids. Oily foundation may cause eyeshadow to run, smear or wear off unattractively. Ideally, use a face powder over liquid foundation to insure a matte finish onto the eyelids before applying eyeshadows.

Apply the first eyeshadow color to the lid base, covering the entire area from the inner to the outer corners of each eye. This color is the dominant color in the compact shade array, or an eyeshadow color of your choosing that complements the color of your eyes or the shirt or top being worn. Use a small, flat, natural bristle brush with a medium or shorter handle for easier control of the tool. Apply the eye shade color with short, even strokes.

Use a darker eyeshadow color on the crease of the eyelid. This color and placement defines the shape of the eyeball and creates the tonal ridge that adds depth to the look of the eyes.

Apply an even lighter color (often called a highlighter in a compact set) directly under the brow line, using a small detail size brush if available. Small sponge tip eyeshadow applicators found in packs in the beauty department of any drugstore work well as well. The amount and placement of the highlighter shadow will differ on every woman. Women with prominent bone structure over the eye at the brow line will want to use highlighter shadow sparingly.

Put a small dab of a pure white shadow into the inner corner of each eye. This small burst of color helps to add shape to the nose as well as brightens this often-overlooked facial area, adding to an overall look of alertness in the eyes and beauty to the overall face.
