How to Install Memory in a Dell M4400

Memory Module.

The Dell Precision Portable Workstation M4400 is a computer with base-mounted memory that's easy to upgrade. The entire base comes off with the twist of a screw and all the lower electronic components are exposed for easy access. The memory modules are stacked on top of each other as opposed to being side-by-side like most other laptops, so if the bottom one is being changed you'll have to remove both modules first. That said, this is a simple five-minute job--ten at the most--that should greatly increase your computer's performance.

    • 4

Turn the computer over and remove the battery.

    • 5

Remove the screw in the center of the base.

    • 6

Slide the base away from the battery bay and lift it off the computer.

    • 7

Locate the memory modules in the center of the base on the opposite end from the battery bay.

    • 8

Spread the clips on the upper memory module compartment and the module will pop up at an accessible angle. Pull the module out of the port. Do the same with the lower module.

    • 9

Insert a memory module into the lower port at an angle and press down until the clips lock onto it. Do this again for the upper memory module.

    • 10

Replace the base and the battery.

    • 11

Return the computer to working condition by replacing the power cable and the peripheral devices. When you start up the computer the system will automatically acknowledge and respond to the newly installed memory.
