How to Hook Up an HP Laser Jet Printer 4200 With a USB Cable
For many years, HP has been a leading name in printer technology, and older printers the company makes are still widely used. Many people still own the Laser Jet 4200 printer made by Hewlett Packard, and they may be looking for a way to make those older printers work on their new computers. Many new computers no longer have parallel ports, so it is important to know how to connect an HP 4200 printer with a USB cable.

1
Turn off your computer and printer and remove the power cords. Locate the USB port on the back of the Laser Jet 4200 printer and connect the square end of the USB cable to that port.
-
2
Connect the flat end of the USB cable to a free USB port on your computer. Connect the power cord to the Laser Jet 4200 printer and power it on.

3
Connect the power cord to your computer and turn it on. Log on to your computer and look for a "found new hardware" message on the lower right corner. This is your indication that the operating system has found the printer and is attempting to install the driver for it.
-
4
Insert the CD that came with your printer, if prompted. If your operating system cannot find a suitable driver, it will prompt you for the CD.
-
5
Click on the "Start" button and choose "Control Panel" from the menu. Double-click the "Printers and Faxes" icon and right-click on your Laser Jet 4200 printer.
-
6
Choose "Properties" from the menu and click the "Print Test Page" button. Make sure the test page prints correctly.
