Critics of Ubuntu and Linux\often claim that you can't play popular computer games on Linux-based operating systems. This is patently false. In fact, using some simple to use tools, many proprietary PC, including Call of Duty Modern Warfare, games can run on Ubuntu and other Linux systems.
Things You'll Need
- Wine software
Installing Call of Duty 4 on Ubuntu
Make sure that your graphics card is working properly. Open a terminal and type “glxinfo | Grep rendering;” Linux is case sensitive and be sure to exclude the semicolon, as that is just part of the sentence. If the terminal returns “Direct Rendering yes,” then your graphics card is installed and working properly. If not, check your card maker's website for troubleshooting information.
Download Wine. Wine is a program that allows Windows programs to tun on non-Windows machines. To download Wine, open a terminal and type “sudo apt – get install wine”, and enter your root password when prompted. The download should begin. Once it has finished, it may ask you to confirm that you want to install Wine, type “y” and hit \"Enter\" to confirm that you do; this should begin the installation process.
Update Wine to the latest version. Call of Duty Modern Warfare requires at least Wine 1.1.1 to work properly. Like most packages in Ubuntu, Wine can be updated through the built in update manager. You should not have to configure Wine yourself, as the default settings should be good enough to run Call of Duty.
Insert your Call of Duty Modern Warfare disc into your disc drive and navigate to that drive. Then, right click on the “setup.exe” and click “open with Wine.” The installation process should execute just as you would expect it to on Windows.
Run Call of Duty Modern Warfare after the installation has completed. The game should run. If it doesn't, there may be something wrong with either your graphic card and its driver, your computer does not have enough RAM to run the game, or you need to configure Wine into Windows XP mode.
Tips & Warnings
- It has been suggested by some users that Call of Duty 4 (Modern Warfare) runs faster if you configure Wine to NT4. If you have any trouble with Wine itself, be sure to see Wine's forums for more information.
- When running games designed for Windows on Linux, you may need slightly better hardware than the minimum suggested on the box, since you will not have Direct X.
