How to Determine Your Tarot Suit

To determine your tarot suit, perform a reading that will show your dominant or ruling tarot suit in the past, present and future. By determining your suit, you can be proactive in negative situations and approach life's crossroads with a clearer understanding. Each suit reveals positive and negative qualities. In each tarot deck, there are four suits (Cups, Wands, Swords and Pentacles) that have 14 cards from ace to 10, plus four court cards. There are also 22 Major Arcana cards, but they should be removed for this reading.

Instructions

  1. The Reading

    • 1

Spread out the silk and shuffle your tarot deck. After re-stacking, select three cards and place them next to each other on the silk from left to right. From the left, they represent past, present and future.

    • 2

Reshuffle the deck and place two cards from the top in each pile.

    • 3

Reshuffle the deck. Place the top card on the "future" stack. Middle cut the deck and place the card on the "present" pile. Place the bottom card on the "past" stack.

    • 4

Shuffle the deck by holding the deck in the right hand and cutting with the left. Place the top card on the past stack. Shuffle and repeat the technique twice by adding a card to the present stack and then the future stack. Set aside remaining cards.

    • 5

Turn over the past stack. What suit is the most predominant? Refer to the resource book for the meaning of the individual cards of the ruling suit. It is important to establish the ruling suit for the past because it provides clarification for decisions made at major crossroads. For example, if Cups was your past dominant suit, then emotions played heavily in all your decisions. Write the results down in a notebook if you like.

    • 6

Turn over the present stack. Note the suit with the most cards and the highest card regardless of suit. If you have two suits that are predominant, it's a warning of an internal struggle. Place the cards from the two suits face down and shuffle. Spread out and meditate on the cards until you feel the energy of one. This will be your ruling suit. Refer to your reference book to note the negatives and positives of the suit and high card.

    • 7

To determine the future suit, repeat the above process. Knowing what suit is ruling your future can help in making decisions relating to career, relationships or money.
