How to Make Fleece Fabric Into Yarn

Save

If you want to create cozy winter scarves and plush throws, but you don't want to purchase expensive yarn, try making your own yarn from fleece fabric. Yarn made from fleece fabric is perfect for chunky knitted and crochet items, and it's easy to make. Creating yarn from fleece fabric takes little time--you can make enough for a knitting or crochet project within an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Fleece fabric
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • Spread the fleece fabric over your work surface and smooth out any creases.

  • Determine how wide you want to make your fleece yarn. If you want super bulky yarn that you can knit up on size 19 needles, plan to make 1 1/2 inch-wide strips of fleece fabric. If you want to knit with smaller needles you will make narrower strips.

  • Cut the fabric into strips. Cut up the length of the fabric to make strips with a grain that runs from top to bottom. Use an acrylic ruler and a rotary cutting tool to make accurate cuts.

  • Fold over the ends of each strip to create about an inch of overlapped fabric.

  • Cut a 1-inch long slit through the center of the folded fabric, beginning at the folded edge and stopping about 1/2 inch from the end of the section of overlapping fabric.

  • Pull the end of one fleece fabric strip through the slit on a second strip of fabric.

  • Feed the other end of the second strip through the slit at the end of the first strip.

  • Pull all of the second strip through the slit until the two strips are snugly secured together.

  • Roll the connected strips into a ball and continue adding new strips of fleece fabric to the yarn end, using the process described above.
