How to Tell If Spark Plug Wires Are Bad

The spark plug wires on your vehicle send an electrical impulse, called "spark," from the vehicle's power distributor to the vehicle's engine. The spark plug wires are connected to the spark plugs, which ignite the compressed fuel mixture inside the engine. When one or more of your spark plug wires fail, you will notice a marked decrease in engine performance. Normally, if more than one plug wire fails, your engine will not run at all. However, before replacing any wires, you'll need to know how to tell if your plug wires are bad.

Set the voltmeter setting to "OHMs"..The "OHM" setting will be marked with a "Ω" on the face of the voltmeter dial.

    • 2

Touch one of the electrical leads on the voltmeter to one of the metal contacts in one end of the plug. Then, touch the other electrical leads on the voltmeter to the other metal contact in the other end of the plug wire.

    • 3

Check the voltmeter readout. The resistance, measured in "OHMs" (Ω) should read "0." A ".05" variance is OK, however, if it is more than that, the wire needs to be replaced.
