How to Connect an iMac to a MacBook
Few things are more frustrating about buying a new computer than having to transfer your old data onto it. You've got your shiny new MacBook, all ready to go, but your files are all on your old iMac (or vice-versa). Fortunately, connecting the two computers isn't too difficult, taking only a few easy steps. This can be done with a few components that you may already have laying around your house, or that can be easily procured at the local computer hardware store.

1
Connect the two computers with either the IEEE 1394 interface cable or the Ethernet cable. Place one end of the cable into the appropriate port on the first computer; next, place the other end into the appropriate socket on the second computer. Make sure that the cable is firmly placed all the way in the port (socket).

2
Designate one computer as the "server." One of your two computers will have to be server, or the main computer. Ideally, the computer that contains the files you are wishing to import should be set as the server. Do this by pulling up the "System preferences" option. Next, click on the icon labeled "Sharing."

3
Select the options you wish to share. The "Sharing" menu will bring up a variety of options for connecting the two computers, in the form of check boxes. Look down the list and decide how you want the two computers connected. This choice can be anything from simply sharing files to being able to remotely use the CD or DVD drive on another computer.

4
Write down the local address network name. The second computer will need the local address of the server computer in order to connect. This address is displayed at the top of the "Sharing" box. For example, if your server computer's name is "MyComputer," then the local address network name will be "mycomputer.local."

5
Connect the second computer. Click the background image on your second computer to enable the "Finder" option. Click the "Go" drop-down menu. Select "Connect to Server." A window will pop up requesting the server address. Enter in the local address network name (in our example "mycomputer.local"). Your iMac and your MacBook are now connected.
