How to Change a Wireless Card on an Acer Aspire One

Save

The Acer Aspire One series of netbooks is purposefully designed to be much smaller than the average laptop so that they are easier to transport. Unfortunately, that makes the computer harder to upgrade, as all the components are crammed into a smaller area. If your wireless card has stopped working or you want a faster card, it is possible the replace the existing card with a new one. The small size and lack of an optical drive means that there are special considerations to take into account when upgrading the wireless card.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Replacement wireless card
  • Navigate to the website for the manufacturer of the replacement wireless card. Download the latest software driver for your specific wireless card model, but do not install the driver yet.

  • Power down the Acer Aspire One netbook computer. Disconnect the power cable and any USB devices connected to the computer.

  • Close the LCD lid. Flip the Acer Aspire One over. Push the battery latch to the unlock position, and remove the battery from the netbook.

  • Remove the three screws along the bottom edge of the Acer case with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the three screws at the top edge of the case. Lift off the rubber stoppers located at the top-right and top-left ends of the case.

  • Remove the screws hidden underneath the rubber stoppers. Flip the Acer Aspire One back over, and open the LCD lid.

  • Locate the three locking tabs along the top edge of the keyboard. Push the tabs back with the edge of a flat-head screwdriver. Grab the top edge of the keyboard, and lift it up toward you until you can see the black keyboard cable.

  • Disconnect the keyboard cable from the Acer Aspire One. Set the keyboard and cable aside. Remove the six screws holding the metal cover over the motherboard.

  • Pull off the metal cover and set it aside. Locate the wireless card at the front of the motherboard. Remove the screw holding the card in place. Lift the card out.

  • Set the replacement wireless card on the open port. Put the screw back into place. Set the metal cover back on, and reconnect all six screws. Reattach the keyboard cable, and set the keyboard back in place.

  • Push the keyboard tabs back into place. Flip the netbook over. Reattach the battery and the screws on the bottom side of the case.

  • Turn the netbook over, and open the LCD lid. Power on the netbook. Open the driver installation file you downloaded earlier. Follow the on-screen prompts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Replacement wireless cards for your Acer Aspire One can be purchased from electronics stores or websites that sell computer hardware components.
  • The Acer Aspire One series has a mini-PCI port for its wireless card. When you acquire a replacement wireless card, you need to ensure that it is sized for a mini-PCI port.
  • The Acer Aspire One netbooks do not have built-in disk drives, so you will not be able to use the driver disk that comes with your wireless card. Your new wireless card will not work properly without the driver software, which is why you must download that software before removing the old card and installing the new one.
