How to Find the Property History of a Home for Free

When thinking about buying a particular house, after the sale is completed is not the time to find out it was confiscated as a meth lab. It's a wise idea to check the property history of the home before committing to a purchase. A property history will reveal any previous sales on the home, as well as past years' taxes, equalized value and any improvements that were made with permits. If the whole idea sounds complicated, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that all it will take is a visit to the county office or website to get the information needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the county offices in the county where the house is located. Typically, this is listed on a real estate listing; the county offices can be found by checking the phone book or by searching online, or use the zip code of the home's address to find the name of the county.

    • 2

Give the county clerk the address of the property and request the tax information on the home. The clerk will enter the information into their database and will produce the property identification number, tax information, state equalized value and any improvements that were made with a permit.

    • 3

Visit the Registrar of Deeds office in the same building and give the clerk the property identification number. Ask her to run a history of transactions on the house in question. She will produce a list of owners and the paperwork attached to each transaction; this will include sales, inheritances and foreclosures related to the property in question.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many counties have this information available online.

  • Some offices may require a fee if you want copies of the paperwork you have located.
