How to Find a Stolen iPhone

Cell phones are lost all the time, but Apple's iPhone has an electronic system to help you find your phone--whether you left it in the kitchen or it was stolen from your gym locker. The benefit of using this new process to recover your lost or stolen phone is that it also includes a way to immediately erase your data so that it is not available to those with whom you do not want to share your personal information. This process also works with an iPod Touch.

Things You'll Need

  • iPhone 3G or 3GS or iPod Touch with 3.0 OS (Operating System) or above
  • MobileMe Annual Subscription
  • Unique Apple username and Password
  • Find My iPhone application
  • Wireless Internet access (required for iPod Touch)
  • Data plan with your cell phone service provider

Instructions

  1. How to Find a Stolen iPhone

    • 1

Turn on your iPhone and make sure that you have data or wireless service. Touch the "Settings" application to access that module. Then touch the "Mail, Contacts, Calendar Section."

    • 2

Turn off the options to sync your calendars and contacts, if desired. Turn on the "Find My iPhone" application by sliding the switch to "On."

    • 3

To locate your lost or stolen phone after setup is complete on your phone or Touch, log onto your MobileMe account. Check the map generated by the iPhone's GPS function to find the approximate location of your iPhone.

    • 4

Remotely set a four-digit passcode to lock your iPhone by logging onto your MobileMe account from your computer. Send a message remotely that will show up on your iPhone to let people know that it has been located and its contents locked.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Find My iPhone application works for both the iPhone and iPod Touch, although the name of the app is "Find My iPhone".

  • The MobileMe application sends a push message to the iPhone with the date and time of the last check-in of your device.

  • When the MobileMe has found the best current location, an "Update Location" button will appear on the MobileMe page on your computer.

  • A single MobileMe account subscription costs $99.00 per year.

  • MobileMe allows separate usernames and passwords on the same account with a Family Plan for $149.00 per year.

  • All people who have access to your MobileMe account also have access to all the data on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

  • Anyone with access to your MobileMe account can also use it to find your location anytime your phone is on and activated.
