How to Play Wooden Spoons
Looking for a simple rhythm instrument? Find one in your kitchen drawer by using a pair of matching wooden spoons. The percussive sound of these spoons keeps a beat for musical sessions. Once you learn to play the wooden spoons, keep practicing to improve your technique and increase your level of comfort with the instrument. You can use metal spoons, for a more metallic clang.

Place the two spoons back to back.

Wrap the rubber band around the bottom of the handles of the two wooden spoons to hold them together. Put the index finger of one hand in the space between the two spoons under the bowls and wrap your other fingers around the handles.

Sitting in a chair with your feet flat on the ground, hit the bowls of the spoon against your thigh to make a clacking sound.

Hold your empty hand, palm side down over your thigh. Bring the spoons up to the hand and hit the inside of the palm creating another clacking sound.

Repeat alternating hitting the spoons on your thigh and palm to keep rhythm with the music.

Make a roll sound by running the spoons across the splayed fingers of your empty hand. Keep the fingers on your empty hand rigid as the spoons hit them to make a sound.
