How to Format Documents for Kindle

The Amazon Kindle e-reader is designed to read books in Amazon's .mobi format as well as .pdf documents. However, you can read a wide variety of document types on your Kindle---including text files such as Microsoft Word and HTML, and image files such as .gif and .jpg--- by following a few simple steps.

Note: Each Kindle comes with a free email address that ends in "@kindle.com". If you have not already set up your email address, see your Kindle User's Guide to learn how to do this, as the email address is necessary for this task.

Instructions

    • 1

Compose a new email and type your @kindle.com email address in the "To" field. You may leave the "Subject" field blank.

    • 2

Attach the file you wish to format for your Kindle.

    • 3

Send the email to your Kindle email address.

    • 4

While on your Kindle's home screen, press the "Menu" button, then select "Turn Wireless On" from the menu.

    • 5

Select "Sync & Check For Items" from the menu. The document will appear in the list of items on your home screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Amazon will charge you a small fee (less than $1) for each document you send to be formatted. In their User Guide, Amazon states that if you want to avoid this fee, send the document to the same email address except the second half should read "@free.kindle.com." Then you can open the email on your computer, download the attachment and transfer it to your Kindle via the USB cable.
