How to Fix a Mac MP3 Tag

Music files downloaded online frequently have incorrect tags, leading to problems such as an incorrect song title or artist being displayed when you play the song back on an iPod or other MP3 player. If you have recently switched to a Mac computer, you may not have discovered how to correct MP3 tags on your Mac yet. Fix an MP3 tag on your Mac using iTunes, included free with every new Mac.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch iTunes. Click on the MP3 file that needs to be corrected, drag it into iTunes and drop it on the "Music" section under "Library." The song is imported into iTunes.

    • 2

Right click on the song, or hold the "Ctrl" key while clicking it if you have a single button mouse, and click "Get Info."

    • 3

Click the "Info" tab in the window that appears, then type the information that you wish to modify the MP3 tag with. Click "OK" when you are done.

    • 4

Drag the song from iTunes back to a folder after fixing the tags if you use an application other than iTunes to play music. Right click on the song in the iTunes library, and click "Delete" to remove it. The copy that you dragged out of iTunes is retained.

Tips & Warnings

  • iTunes has the ability to fix the tags of several MP3s simultaneously. This is useful if an entire group of songs from the same album is missing the album name, for example. Hold the "Ctrl" key while selecting multiple songs from the iTunes library, then select "Get Info" on one of them. The "Multiple Item Information" window will appear, confirming that you are editing several songs.
