How to Cover a Mirror on a Closet Door

Mirrored closet doors can be updated to blend with any decor. With the use of glass paints, which are readily available, you can match the closet doors to the surrounding walls. Or you can paint them a bold accent color to continue to use them as a focal point in the room. Stencils can transform your outdated mirrored closet doors into works of art. With the right preparation, primer and paints, covering a mirror on a closet door is a cost-effective alternative to replacement.

Things You'll Need

• Saw horses
• Glass cleaner
• Lint-free cotton cloth
• Low-nap paint rollers
• Surface conditioning primer
• Air-dry glass paint
• Sticky stencil (if desired)
• Sponge (if desired)
• Clear gloss or satin glaze

Instructions

1. Remove the mirrored doors from the track and position them mirrored side up on saw horses.

2. Clean the mirrored surface with glass cleaner, rinse the cleaner off the surface with water and dry the surface with a lint-free cotton cloth.

3. Paint the mirror surface with a thin, even coat of surface conditioning primer applied with a low-nap paint roller. Allow the primer to dry for 30 minutes.

4. Paint the surface of the mirror with air-dry glass paint applied with a low-nap paint roller. Allow the paint to dry for one hour.

5. Place a sticky stencil on the painted surface and paint the openings in the stencils with air-dry glass paint applied with a sponge, if desired. Allow the stenciled paint to dry for 30 minutes before removing the stencils and an additional 30 minutes before applying a clear-coat glaze.

6. Paint the entire closet door with a clear-coat gloss or satin glaze applied with a low-nap paint roller to seal the paint and increase its durability.

Tips & Warnings

• Glass surface primers, paints and glaze can be purchased at craft stores.

• If you cannot locate a sticky stencil, secure the stencil to the mirror with painter's tape.
