How to Troubleshoot AT&T DSL

DSL stands for "digital subscriber line" and is a technology that allows computers to connect to the internet. DSL internet connections use the existing copper phone lines to transport digital signals. DSL is considered high speed internet, but the connection speeds are considerably slower than a cable connection. AT&T is a popular DSL internet provider because they offer what is known as a dry DSL service. That is, a user can subscribe to AT&T DSL service without having an existing phone service. A very common problem with DSL, and any other internet service for that matter, is a lack of connectivity.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to see which lights are flashing red on the modem itself. There should be at least four LED lights including "Power, Internet, Ethernet, and DSL". If the DSL light is red, you will have to contact AT&T. If the power, internet, or ethernet lights are red, try steps 2 through 6.

    • 2

Bypass a surge protector if you are using one with your modem. Plug the power cord directly into the wall socket and attempt to connect to the internet again.

    • 3

Bypass your wireless router if you are using one. Try connecting your computer directly to the modem.

    • 4

Reset the modem, wireless router, and computer. First, unplug the modem and wireless router from the socket. Then, restart your computer. As the computer is booting, plug both the modem and router back in.

    • 5

Check your network settings if you are running your DSL internet through a wireless router. Make sure that your computer is connecting properly to the router by evaluating your network settings.

    • 6

Make sure that all cables and phone lines are properly connected. Make sure that your phone line is connected to the phone line input of your modem. Also, check to make sure that your ethernet cable is connected properly and securely to your computer.
