Scouting offers boys many unique opportunities for learning, camaraderie and just plain fun. Besides, where else can your son learn to tie a square knot?

From Quick Guide: Become a Boy Scout
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Locate a Boy Scouts group near you through the organization's Web site or by contacting the Boy Scouts of America.

  2. Step 2

Select the right program. The Boy Scouts of America offers three programs for boys of various ages. Explorers is the program for boys and girls (yes, girls, too) ages 14 through 20, who have completed the eighth grade. The Boy Scouts is for boys (and only boys) between 11 and 17 who have completed the fifth grade and earned the Arrow of Light. Second-grade through fifth-grade boys between the ages of 8 and 10 can join a Cub Scout pack.

  3. Step 3

Submit a completed application and health history, along with a modest fee (less than $10).

  4. Step 4

Have your son demonstrate the Scout salute, sign and handshake.

  5. Step 5

Have him repeat the Pledge of Allegiance.

  6. Step 6

Make sure he understands and agrees to live by the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, the Scout Motto, the Scout Slogan and the Outdoor Code.

  7. Step 7

Congratulations! Your son is a member of the Boy Scouts of America.

on 3/12/2009 My son and I really enjoyed Cub scouts as we had a great leader. We could not find a Scout leader we liked, so we stopped at the 6th grade level. But it was a great program for family when the boys were small as most of the activities were family based.

on 10/6/2006 This has some outdated information in it.

Explorers no longer exists, it was moved into 2 programs Venturing and Learning for Life. Both programs are coed and for youth 14-20.

Cub Scouts now starts in First Grade and goes through Fifth Grade. It changed from being age based to being grade based.

You can go to this site to find a local unit in your area. http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=xx&c=lc

on 9/18/2006 Remember that a scout troop is like a pair of hiking boots; If the boots are comfortable, your son will hike a long time and enjoy it. If they pinch and are uncomfortable, he won't stay with it. If your son's troop isn't a comfortable fit for him... find another!
