Turn Off Data Roaming On The iPhone

When traveling abroad with an iPhone, you can avoid substantial roaming charges by turning off roaming. Over a long trip, these charges can add up.

By turning off roaming, you will be able to avoid these international roaming charges. Follow these simple instructions to turn off iPhone roaming.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First, make sure your iPhone is updated the latest firmware version. This is not necessary but is always a wise idea, especially if you traveling abroad.

Next, navigate to the iPhone home page by pressing the "Home" button (it's the only button on the front of the device). In this screen you should see your first page of apps.

  3. Step 3

Enter the iPhone settings by clicking the "Settings" app icon, which looks like grey gears. In settings, select "General".

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to check the coverage map of your particular phone plans. For most US iPhone users, there are no roaming charges in places such as Puerto Rico or Hawaii.
  • If you need to use data abroad, consider purchasing an international data plan or buying a phone plan in the country you are visiting. This is usually as easy as buying a cheap SIM card with a pay as you go plan but is usually cheaper than roaming charges.
