How to Make Round Collapsing Paper Lanterns

Remember those paper lanterns you made as a kid? Maybe it is time you made some of those with your own kids. Search out a few sheets of bright construction or patterned papers---maybe throw in some glitter or dangling beads---add a few strands of colored twinkle lights, and voila, you have the beginnings of a great outdoor kids' party! Or buy some elegant papers and delicate chains to hang them from, and create sophisticated versions for an adult gathering.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Construction paper or patterned papers
    • Ruler
    • Pencil
    • Scissors
    • Glue
    • Twinkle style or LED strand lights
    • Tape
    1. Use construction or patterned paper to make colorful lanterns

      • 1

Fold each piece of construction paper in half lengthwise to create a narrow rectangle.

      • 2

Draw a faint pencil line as a guide 1 inch from the unfolded edge all the way across using a ruler.

      • 3

Starting 1 inch in from one end, cut slits straight in from the FOLDED edge to the pencil line on the open edge. Space cuts about ½ inch apart all the way to within 1 inch from the opposite side.

      • 4

Open the folded rectangle so that the paper lies flat with a 1 inch border all the way around the area of cuts. Pull one short side up and curve it around to meet the other side; glue ends together to form a cylinder.

      • 5

Cut a strip of paper ½ inch wide and 6 to 8 inches long. Glue one end to each side of the cylinder top to act as a handle.

      • 6

Press down gently on the top of the cylinder---it should bow out in the area where folded, creating a rounded paper lantern shape.

      • 7

String several lanterns along a strand of small twinkle style lights, placing one light down inside each lantern---tape in place---for a festive strand of lighted lanterns.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Experiment with smaller lanterns spaced closer together for an unusual Christmas tree or mantel decoration. Use red and green papers.

    • Use parchment or patterned rice paper instead of construction paper, and all white lights for elegant decorations at a wedding or outdoor party. Use gold or silver wire instead of paper, to hang the lanterns.

    • To avoid fire, DO NOT use candles or hot lights inside paper lanterns! Use only low power "twinkle" lights or LEDs.
