Deactivate Pepper Spray
-
1
Resist the urge to rub your eyes because this will reactivate the Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray and intensify the burning sensation.
-
2
Fill a spray bottle with whole milk and spray it directly into your eyes. As an alternative, soak a clean towel in milk and squeeze it into your eyes or lay it over them.
-
-
3
Mix 1 part dishwashing detergent with 4 parts cold water to create a gallon-sized solution to deactivate the oil. Submerge your face into the solution and open your eyes. Do this 15 seconds at a time, for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.

Contact-lens wearers should remove lenses immediately and throw them away.

Tips & Warnings
Pepper spray affects the mucus membranes in the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, bringing about symptoms immediately. The capillaries in your eyes will dilate, causing momentary blindness and intense burning. Your airway also will swell, causing strained breathing.
Pepper spray does not cause permanent damage. It is intended to temporarily disable a person.
Know the difference between mace and pepper spray.
Mace, a trademark, is a type of tear gas. Unlike pepper spray, Mace will not cause temporary blindness or breathing problems.
Mace may not affect those under the influence of mind-altering drugs, whereas pepper spray has proved effective against the same individuals.
