Smoke detectors, also called smoke alarms, are essential in all homes and businesses. Over time, smoke detectors begin to lose their effectiveness and must be replaced with a new unit. The old one can then be recycled in several ways.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Remove the batteries.

  2. Step 2

Take off any extra plastic pieces from your smoke detector and recycle them with your regular plastics.

  3. Step 3

Mail your old smoke detector directly to the manufacturer--most will accept old units. The name of the manufacturer will be on the back of the unit.

  4. Step 4

Take your old smoke detector to a recycling center.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a website such as Earth911 to find a recycling center near you that accepts smoke detectors.
  • Stores that sell smoke detectors may also take your old ones and recycle them for you.
  • Never crush your smoke detector before recycling it.
