How to Stack a Pillered Wedding Cake

Stacking the layers of a multi-tiered wedding cake is not an easy task and employing pillars to stack the layers can make the task even more difficult. Each pillar must be placed in the correct position, otherwise they won't properly hold the weight of the layers above them and the entire cake could collapse. Even when they are placed correctly, a single jostle could shift the weight, making the cake topple. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Separator plates
  • Cake tiers
  • Pillars
  • Dowel
  • Sharp knife or utility scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Place each tier of the cake onto a separator plate two inches longer in diameter than the tier.

    • 2

Mark the icing in four places on the top of the first tier, making a perfect square.

    • 3

Place four pillars on these marks.

    • 4

Press a dowel in through the center of each pillar until each touches the separator plate. Trim the excess dowel.

    • 5

Place the next tier on the four pillars. Continue adding pillars, dowels and layers until the cake is fully assembled.

Tips & Warnings

  • Assemble a pillared wedding cake at the location. The cake will likely be too fragile to transport after it has been assembled.

  • Be careful to press the dowels straight down into each tier. Placing them in at a slant will cause the cake to be unstable.
