How to Replace RV Air Conditioning Units
RV air conditioners run on the same principles as a home window air conditioning unit and usually are between 13,500 and 15,000 BTUs. The main difference is that the window unit is self-contained and the RV unit has the condenser and compressor mounted on the roof. Generally, the air-cooling unit is mounted inside the roof. If yours breaks down, you can replace it yourself instead of paying someone else.

1
Climb on the roof using a ladder or scaffolding. Remove the air conditioner cover so you can evaluate the situation.
-
2
Disconnect the air-cooling unit, leaving as much wiring as possible to be hooked up to the new unit from inside the RV or on the roof.

-
3
Remove the condenser and compressor, and remove any old sealant using a utility knife. Then clean the area thoroughly with mild soap and water.
-
4
Carry the top part of the air conditioner up on the roof carefully with some help from a friend or neighbor. Use caution so you do not fall off the roof.
-
5
Put down some new sealant using a caulk gun, paintbrush or tape (depending on what sealant you choose).
-
6
Set in the new condenser unit
-
7
Go inside the RV and hold the air-cooling unit over its location. Hook up all the wiring. Mount the air-cooling unit.
-
8
Turn on the unit and test to assure everything is hooked up properly.
