Instructions

    • 1

Measure the windows to find out how much fabric you need for your drapes. For width, measure across the window and add 10 inches. Each panel of the drapes will be cut to this width measurement, to allow for fullness in the drapes. For length, add 10 inches to allow for hemming and for the rod-pocket casing.

    • 2

Buy the appropriate amount of fabric and the same amount of lining fabric.

    • 3

Cut out your drapery panels and lining to the measurements you took earlier.

    • 4

Lay one panel, right side down, on a large, flat surface. Use a clean floor if you have to.

    • 5

Place one piece of lining on top of the drapery panel. Line up all the edges.

    • 6

Fold under raw edges on the two long sides and one short side, which will be the bottom of the curtain. Use pins to hold the fabric in place.

    • 7

Sew around the three pinned sides of the curtain. Remove the pins as you sew.

    • 8

Get your drapery rod and measure its width.

    • 9

Fold down the top of the drape to this measurement plus 4 inches. Fold under the raw edges of the fold one inch. Pin in place.

    • 10

Stitch across the drape where you pinned under the raw edges. Make sure to back stitch at the beginning and end of the seam.

    • 11

Measure from the very top of the drape down two inches. Use pins to mark your sewing line to form the rod pocket. Check the rod-pocket measurements before sewing the final seam. Make sure it measures one-half-inch larger than the actual rod. Adjust the pins to adjust the measurement if necessary.

    • 12

Sew across the final seam, back stitching at the beginning and the end to reinforce the seam, to complete the project.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase all of the the fabric from the same bolt of material, if possible, since different bolts may come from different dye lots, making the fabrics different shades of color. This will be very noticeable when the drapes hang next to each other in the same window. If you must purchase from multiple bolts, cut panels for the same window from the same bolt.
