How to Make a Grecian Goddess Costume

Toga parties involve women just as easily as men, and a few quick adjustments can ensure that a woman's toga covers all the right parts. But with a little extra effort, you can parlay that into something more elaborate: a costume representing a formal Greek goddess. It can make you the hit of the toga party... or just help you stand out this Halloween. It requires only a few easy components and a basic knowledge of Greek mythology.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 lengths of cloth
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • 2 brooches
  • Gold rope or cord
  • Wire hanger
  • Wire cutters
  • Sandals
  • Prop specific to your goddess
  1. Step 1

Research the Greek goddesses and settle on one you might like. Aphrodite, for example, is the goddess of love, while Demeter is the goddess of nature. Think about what color fabric might represent that particular goddess---green for Demeter, perhaps, or pink for Aphrodite. Also look into symbols that might represent your chosen goddess, such as a peacock for Hera.

  2. Step 2

Go to a fabric store and measure two bolts of cloth in the color you want. Measure a width from your shoulders to the ground and about 4 to 4.5 ft. wide.

  3. Step 3

Sew the two pieces together lengthwise along the sides, leaving enough room, at least 8 to 10 in., at the top to fit your arms between them comfortably.

  4. Step 4

Use a pair of brooches to pin the unsewn top corners of the fabric together. You should then be able to slip into it, place your head out of the top and have the brooches support the fabric at your shoulders.

  5. Step 5

Wrap a piece of gold-colored rope around your waist to form a belt. You can also criss-cross it from your waist up across your chest if you prefer.

  6. Step 6

Snip off the hook of a metal coat hanger, then wrap the remainder around your head, just above the ears. Wrap a length of plastic ivy around it to act as a wreath.

  7. Step 7

Wear a pair of sandals beneath your robes. They should ideally be leather or fabric sandals with an open toe---something that evokes ancient temples, not a day at the beach.

  8. Step 8

Select a prop to complete the look of your goddess. Flowers work well for Demeter, while a peacock feather is perfect for Hera. You can invoke Athena with a stuffed owl or a spear or Artemis with a bow and arrow.

Tips & Warnings
  • Though historical accuracy is nice, so is modesty. You should probably wear a pair of shorts and/or a bra underneath your Greek goddess costume.
  • Avoid using sheets if you can. Sheets can be very expensive and making a Greek robe out of them will likely ruin them. It's much cheaper just to buy a bolt of cloth.
