How to Toggle Between Windows

Switching quickly between open windows can be accomplished by clicking an icon on the taskbar. However, there is also a keyboard shortcut for completing this action. Additionally, Windows Vista includes the ability to toggle between 3D representations of windows, a valuable feature in situations where many programs are running.

Instructions

  1. Standard Method (XP and Vista)

    • 1

      Hold the "Alt" key on the keyboard and hit the "Tab" key. Leave the "Alt" key held down. This will bring up a small window with pictures representing your open programs.

      Hit the "Tab" key with the "Alt" key still held down to cycle between open programs until the one that you want is highlighted.

      Release the "Alt" key to bring the highlighted window to the foreground.

    3D Method (Vista Only)

      Hold the "Windows Logo" key on the keyboard and hit the "Tab" key. You will see 3D representations of your open programs in an offset tiled orientation. The picture on the far right, with no other picture blocking it, is the active window.

      Hit the "Tab" key with the "Windows Logo" key still held down to cycle between windows.

      Release the "Tab" key when the window you want is on the far right. This window will be brought to the foreground.
