When you buy a prepaid debit card it works very much like a credit card, except your "credit line" is limited to the amount of money you've deposited with the card issuer. You can use a prepaid debit card anywhere credit cards or bank debit cards ("check cards") are accepted. To use a prepaid debit card in an ATM you'll need a PIN (personal identification number) which is not required for other types of transactions. If you don't have the PIN, call the card issuer's customer service number and request one.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the balance on your prepaid debit card before you try to withdraw money from an ATM. Do this online on your card issuer's website or by calling the customer service number on the back of the card.

  2. Step 2

Insert the prepaid debit card in the ATM card slot and enter your PIN when the display prompts you.

  3. Step 3

Enter "Yes" when asked if you want a receipt. The receipt is your legal record of the transaction. It's also useful to help you keep track of your transactions.

  4. Step 4

Enter the amount of cash you wish to withdraw. Don't forget to allow for the fee the ATM provider will charge you when deciding how much cash you want to withdraw.

  5. Step 5

Retrieve your card when the ATM returns it. Then get your receipt and cash.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prepaid debit cards are useful for parents who want to provide young people with spending money in a safe and secure form. They also make great gifts and many card issuers will personalize them for you.
  • Memorize your PIN. If you write your PIN down just in case you forget it, keep the record in a secure place separate from your prepaid debit card. Always exercise caution when using an ATM. It's best to only access ATMs in well-lighted areas with other people around. Be wary of anyone who seems to be loitering around an ATM.
