How to Connect Computers Using a Crossover Cable

A crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable used to directly connect two devices of the same type for networking purposes. A crossover cable differs from a regular Ethernet cable in that it allows data to be sent and received on both ends, while a regular cable allows only one-way communication. Computers networked this way can share files and peripherals or play two-player games without the need for a hub or router.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure both computers are turned off. Plug each end of the crossover cable into the network jack on the back of each computer. The network jack will look like a larger version of a standard telephone jack.

    • 2

Power on both computers and allow Windows XP to fully load.

    • 3

      Click "Start" and "Control Panel."

    • 4

Open "Network Connections" from the Control Panel window.

    • 5

Right-click "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties."

    • 6

Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the list and click the "Properties" button.

    • 7

Select the radio button next to "Use the following IP address" to set the IP address manually.

    • 8

Enter a numeric IP address into the box marked "IP Address." Use 192.168.1.100 as the IP address and 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask. Because this is a private computer-to-computer network, you can leave the DNS servers and default gateway blank. Click "OK" when finished.

    • 9

Complete the same setup on the second computer, using 192.168.1.101 as the IP address. The two computers should now be connected and able to share resources.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use your own IP addresses, make sure each computer has a unique address.
