Instructions

    • 1

Gather small lip gloss tins and containers. Containers can be purchased in various sizes at beauty supply and health food stores. Soda bottle caps also make great lip gloss holders.

    • 2

Measure approximately 1 tbsp. of petroleum jelly per container of lip gloss and place in a plastic bag. Adjust measurement more or less depending on the container size. Melt the petroleum jelly in the microwave for approximately two minutes, or until the mixture is in a liquid state. Time will vary depending on microwave settings and the amount of petroleum jelly used. Use extreme caution when handling the warm petroleum jelly. Watch the solution closely and do not allow it to boil.

    • 3

Pour liquid solution into containers. Add four to five drops of orange, apricot or coconut food flavoring to each container. Food flavoring can be found in the cooking aisle at most grocery stores. Alternatively, one or two pinches of flavored gelatin mix or powdered fruit drink can be used to add flavor and color to the lip gloss. Use a toothpick to quickly stir the solution. Allow to dry by covering with plastic wrap and setting in the refrigerator.

    • 4

Add additional ingredients to the lip gloss for color and conditioning benefits. Add a small sliver of lipstick to the petroleum jelly mixture prior to microwaving. The lipstick will give the lip gloss slight coloration. Mix well prior to placing in the container. To add a small touch of shimmer to the lip gloss, add a pinch of crushed metallic eye shadow containing mica powder to the liquid solution. Mix well using a small toothpick. Include vitamin E for additional lip conditioning. Pierce a vitamin E capsule with a needle. Squeeze out the liquid; use as much or as little of the capsules ingredients as desired. Reheat the solution if the mixture has started drying and is not mixing well.

Include pinches of cinnamon powder and peppermint drops for additional flavors. Use cocoa powder and mix with petroleum jelly for a chocolate taste.

Tips & Warnings

  • Beeswax can also be used for the base of the lip gloss. Melt in the microwave or a double boiler. Beeswax can be purchased at most health food stores.
