How to Design Your Own Bookmarks
A good, heavy bookmark is the best way to save your place in a book or magazine. Folding down the pages damages them, and old receipts and scrap pieces of paper are too lightweight to be as effective. Unfortunately, some of us resort to these drastic measures because store bought bookmarks can be expensive. Thankfully, it's simple to make your own inexpensive bookmarks at home with materials you probably already have.
Things You'll Need
- Cardstock
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- Ribbon
- Markers
- Glue stick (optional)
- Beads (optional)
- Rubber stamps (optional)
- Construction paper (optional)
Instructions

1
Decide what size you want your bookmark to be and cut a piece of cardstock to that size. The usual size of a bookmark is about 1-1/2 inches by 5 inches.
-
2
Round off the edges of the bookmark with scissors to avoid paper cuts and to give the bookmark a more polished look.
-
-
3
Punch a hole in the center of one of the shorter sides of the bookmark. Cut a piece of ribbon that is 6 inches long.
-
4
Fold the ribbon in half and thread the looped end half way through the hole in the bookmark. Bring the raw edges of the ribbon through the looped part on the opposite side of the bookmark and pull tight.
-
5
Customize your bookmark by adding a design with permanent markers, stamping it with rubber stamps, cutting out construction paper shapes and gluing them onto the bookmark or threading beads onto the ribbon.

Tips & Warnings
To give the bookmark more flair, use a different-shaped hole punch (triangle, square, or heart shape) instead of a circular one. Tuck a personalized bookmark into a book you're giving someone.
