You take a risk every time you go to a salon to get your haircut. Will you end up loving it or reaching for a bag to put over your head? Fortunately, there are ways to put the odds in your favor. Here's how to not get a bad haircut.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To not get a bad haircut, do your homework. Don't make an appointment at the salon with the prettiest ad in the yellow pages. Ask around and find a hairdresser that comes highly recommended. Check out the haircuts on people at clothing boutiques and cosmetic counters. When you find one you like, ask who her hairdresser is. They're usually in the know when it comes to good hairdressers.

  2. Step 2

Schedule your appointment wisely. Make it a point to get your haircut on a day the salon isn't busy. The hairdresser will have more time to spend with you and will be more likely to give you the haircut you're looking for. Avoid getting your hair cut on a Friday or Saturday which are usually the busiest days. Make your appointment for a slow day such as a Monday.

  3. Step 3

To avoid a bad haircut, learn the art of communicating with your hairdresser. Thumb through hair magazines and cut out photos of haircuts you like. Bring these in on the day of your appointment. A picture speaks louder than words when it comes to letting your hairdresser know what you want.

  4. Step 4

Be realistic. Don't ask your hairdresser for a haircut that won't work with your hair texture. Just because it looks good on the model with coarse, wavy hair doesn't mean it'll work with your straight, fine hair.

  5. Step 5

To not get a bad haircut, tell your hairdresser in unequivocal terms how many inches you want off. Specify in terms of inches and have her show you with her hands how much she's going to cut. Hairdressers have an annoying habit of cutting more hair than you want.

  6. Step 6

Once you find a hairdresser you like, stick with her. You'll be far less likely to get a back haircut if she knows you well.
