Prepare the hair clip. Select the type of hair clip you wish to use as a base for the hair accessory. Lining the clip with ribbon is optional but it may give your barrette or hairbow a more polished and professional appearance. To line the clip, select a ribbon about the same width as the clip and glue it in place across the top and side. Be sure to choose a color of ribbon that will complement the other colors you will be using. Lining the inside of some clip styles prevents them from closing or fastening securely in the hair so be cautious before fully lining the insides of hair fasteners. If you choose to line the clip or barrette with fancy ribbon, lace, or edging, you could have a finished hair accessory that quickly.

Make a bow for your barrette. Cut a length of ribbon or several cuts of the same or different colors for a more full bow. Barrette fasteners hold better in the hair with smaller bows, so a shorter amount of ribbon will be used for them. For larger bows, longer amounts of ribbon should be cut. Tie each ribbon into a bow and secure it with glue or thread.
