An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique digital code assigned for each computer connected to the Internet. An IP address is written in the dot decimal form, for example, 195.12.128.64. The IP address not only identifies a computer but also encodes information about the network that the computer is assigned to. Windows XP/Vista includes a system program that allows finding out IP configuration for your computer and particularly an IP address.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Log in to Windows Vista/XP and click "Start."

  2. Step 2

Type "cmd" and press "Enter" to open a command prompt window. Only if you use Windows XP, click "Run" first.

  3. Step 3

Type "ipconfig" in the command prompt window and press "Enter."

  4. Step 4

Look through the program output. The IP address of your computer will be listed as in this example:
    "IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 193.48.186.10"
