How to Trim Fringe Bangs

While bangs (also called "fringe") can punch up a hairstyle and offer you versatility, their upkeep can sometimes be frustrating. Even a quick trip to the hairstylist just for a bangs trim may not fit into your busy schedule. Besides, while some salons will trim a client's bangs for free between haircuts, others may charge a small fee for that service. Trimming your own bangs at home only takes a few moments and very little equipment. So let's get started on that beautiful 'do.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dry hair
  • Hair clips
  • Hair scissors between 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 inches
  • Mirror
  • Fine-toothed comb
  1. Step 1

Separate the non-bang hair from your bangs and clip it back so that you can clearly see what you will be doing. Ensure that only your bangs are free and available to work with.

  2. Step 2

Grasp your bangs between the fingers of one hand and twist against your forehead as if twisting into a rope.

  3. Step 3

Holding your scissors vertically, with the points facing up, snip away at the hair between your fingertips.

  4. Step 4

When you have snipped off the desired amount, comb your bangs out and check their appearance. If there are any bits that are sticking out, you may cut these with your scissors held horizontally.

  5. Step 5

Comb your bangs out again to ensure they are now even.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is important to start with dry hair. Wet hair will shrink as it dries, affecting the length of your bangs. Snip away over a towel or wastebasket so your hair will not plug up your sink drain. If your salon does offer to trim your bangs for free between haircuts, remember that a tip of $5 to $7 is often expected for this courtesy.
  • Always use caution when using scissors near your eyes.
