find an architect in Illinois

Let's face it, Googling "Chicago Architect" is not the best way to find the architect that is right for you and your project.

No matter what your design challenge, finding the right architect will determine whether you have success or regrets.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time to review portfolios, qualifications, and conduct interviews
  • As much information about your potential project as possible.
  1. Step 1

    Get a referral:
If possible, ask someone you know if they have worked with an architect on a similar project. If they have someone to recommend, chances are they will also do a good job for you.

  2. Step 2
The AIA link is in the resources box below.

    Use the AIA:
Don't stop at just a referral. Also check the local or IL state American Institute of Architects (AIA) chapter for listings of architects in your area. Architects who are members of the AIA maintain high levels of continuing education and are bound by a code of professional ethics beyond state licensure. These things separate them from the crowd and may be of importance to you.

  3. Step 3

    Check the ALA:
In Illinois, the Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) also maintains searchable databases of registered architects. Firms listed here are generally also interested in projects in the Midwest.

  4. Step 4
Only USBGC Member Firms can use this logo.

Going Green? Consider using a USGBC Member Firm:
The US Green Building Council (USGBC maintains a database of member architecture firms that are dedicated to "green," "high-performance" and "LEED" projects in Illinois. Check the resources links for a quick link to their website and search for IL architects.

  5. Step 5

Got a small project? Consider ServiceMagic:
For smaller residential jobs, you might be able to utilize the database provided by Service Magic. They can match you to a verified architect or designer by area code, area of expertise, and budget amount.

Tips & Warnings
  • Verify licensure and insurance with the appropriate state agencies.
  • Work only with an architect who promotes collaboration.
  • Choose to work with the right sized firm. A large, national office based out of the loop might not give your new two-flat the attention it deserves.
  • Don't go with the first architect you find, or the first one that your friend points you towards. Give yourself a chance to compare.
