Use Garlic to Treat Fleas on Dogs

Vampires aren't the only ones with an aversion to garlic--fleas don't like it either! Use garlic to treat your dog's flea problem naturally, instead of using harsh chemicals that can irritate your dog's skin.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Raw garlic cloves
  1. Step 1

Weigh your dog. It's important to know how much your dog weighs so that you don't give him too little or too much garlic. You should use one crushed clove of garlic per every 30 pounds.

Remember, one clove is not one whole bulb of garlic. It is simply one of the chambers.

For instance, if your dog weighs 60 pounds, use two cloves of garlic. If your dog weighs 15 pounds, use 1/2 clove.

  2. Step 2

Separate your clove(s) of garlic and then crush the amount that is correct for the weight of your dog. You can use a garlic press or you can simply press down on the clove with the flat side of a large knife.

  3. Step 3

Add the correct amount of crushed garlic to the dog's food. Some veterinarians recommend heating the garlic before adding it to the dog food because this aids in digestion.

  4. Step 4

Serve your dog the garlic mixed with dog food once per day and you should begin to see the flea problem decrease within a few days. Watch your dog carefully for signs of sickness, as too much garlic can be harmful to dogs. If your dog shows signs of lethargy or weakness, take it to the vet immediately for a check up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that you weigh your dog before administering garlic as a flea remedy. Too much garlic in a dog's diet can make your dog sick.
