Now that surgery is behind you, it's time to find a mastectomy bra that is comfortable and fits well. When you start your search for mastectomy bra, look for a quality fabric that is absorbent and does not irritate your skin.

Instructions

Get fit for your mastectomy prosthesis. You should get fitted as soon as you have completed healing from surgery. The fitting will involve wearing breast forms, which are soft shells made of silicone gel. The forms come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. You have the option of having a nipple fashioned on the prosthesis. You also have the option of getting a custom prosthesis formed. A custom prosthesis can help produce a form that resembles real breasts. A properly fitting form should not have any air pockets or gaps. Double mastectomy patients can choose forms of any size and shape. For a more natural transition, the form should conform to your body in shape.

Measure the circumference of the chest. Measure where the lowest fold of the form or breast meets the chest. The bra band size is determined by the total circumference of the chest.

    • 3

Measure the breast circumference. To measure the breast circumference, wrap the measuring tape around the breast area. The tape should lay flat against the nipple or the highest area of the breast. The measurement of the chest will be subtracted from the breast circumference to help you determine your proper cup size

Choose a bra. Cotton seamless bras are popular because they are soft and have wonderful details, but there are a number of styles from which to choose. Bras can be found with both front and back closures which make use easy. You can also find bras with Velcro closures in the front. Ideally, the bra should have built in-packets to hold the breast forms securely and allow you to continue with your normal activities without being concerned about the form falling out.

Tips & Warnings

  • A mastectomy bra that fits properly will softly rest against the body and not cut into the skin. The bra should not cause marks or indentations on the skin.
