Replace Your Serpentine Belt
Replace Your Serpentine Belt

Have you inspected your serpentine belt and noticed cracking and wear. This is an indication you need to replace your serpentine belt. Here are tips to help you change your damaged belt.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • breaker bar
  • socket
  • new belt
  1. Step 1

Raise the hood. Locate the diagram of the belt pattern around the pulleys on the front of the car under the hood or draw a diagram or take a picture.

  2. Step 2

Using a breaker bar and socket, put the socket on the bolt of the belt tensioner and push the breaker bar toward the ground to relieve the tension on the belt and slide the belt off the tension pulley. You may choose to have your alternator inspected at this time.

  3. Step 3

Position the new belt around the pulleys according to the diagram. The last pulley should be the belt tensioner pulley. Use the breaker bar and socket again to loosen the tension. Slide the belt onto the pulley. This may be difficult due to the tightness and the belt may seem too small. Once the belt is on the tension pulley and the belt is on all the pulleys correctly, close the hood.
